19th INDIA DESIGN SUMMIT

Welcome to the summit of Ideas!

The summit is a platform to create an enduring partnership between design and organizations leading to innovation and increased economic competitiveness. Just as large and small gears work together in harmony, when designers work with organizations, they ignite innovation.

Design has become pervasive. The activity of design is being practiced by myriads of disciplines including engineering, computer science, information systems, and business. Titles such as software design, engineering design, human-computer interaction design, and systems design is commonly seen now along with product design, industrial design and graphic design. Everyone connected with these titles and other such titles are welcome!

The discipline of design offers a unique way of seeing the world and approaching problems. The summit is a stage to bring the traditional fields of design in partnership with the fields of technology and business towards the development of new products - real and virtual. It is a manifesto to inform the future of our highly technological age, profoundly in need of humanizing.

The summit will bring about new ideas, new initiatives, and new thinking needed to contribute to the larger picture of design in the knowledge economy. The purpose of the summit is to synergize, find new methods of working together with an attitude of openness, cooperation, and exploration.

SUMMIT THEME

Design for Social Sector

India Design Summit focuses on social sector to deep dive in the sector specific aspects and applications of design. Social sector in India includes several important components such as education, health and medical care, water supply and sanitation, poverty alleviation, housing conditions etc. that play a vital contribution in human development. Investments in social sector have been the measure of the value system of an economy which fosters philanthropy, social safety net, social business, social entrepreneurship etc. Due to the rapidly globalizing competitive marketplace coupled with an increasing need to enhance quality of life at the grassroots level, the policy makers in India are slowly but surely setting the social sector on the reform track.

The designers have always focused on improving the look and functionality of products. Recently, they have begun using design tools to tackle more complex problems, such as finding ways to provide low-cost diagnostics, medical instruments and also access to quality health care especially for the remote areas. Businesses are embracing design thinking because it helps them be more innovative, differentiate their brands better, and bring their products and services to market faster in this rapidly changing world. The non-for-profit organizations are beginning to use design as well to develop better solutions to social problems. Design thinking crosses the traditional boundaries between public, for-profit, and nonprofit sectors. By working closely with the clients and consumers, design thinking allows high-impact solutions to bubble up from below rather than being imposed from the top.

The summit will address the need of focusing on augmenting design strategies to cater to the problems of social sector to create better standard of living. The initiative is aimed at driving the development of rural as well as urban sector while addressing the needs of the bottom of the social pyramid. The summit presentation will emphasize on having in-depth case-studies on design interventions in the social sector.
