The initiative aims to identify and honour talented students for innovative design solutions.
Government of Telangana in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) would be organizing Design Challenge for students. The students will work on design solutions for the challenges posed by the Govt. of Telangana and submit their ideas on an online portal.
Design a unique water bottle to reduce plastic pollution - eg. Easy to crush or self-crushing bottle, sachets, any other plastic products.
Design a universally recognizable symbol/logo for the persons agnostic of culture, academic and socio-economic backgrounds for (a) warnings for danger, keep out etc. (b) toilets (c) chemist shop (d) medical facility (e) ‘Zebra’ crossing.
Design interventions to alter human behaviour and create a more civil society. Subtle communication tools to make people more inclined to follow rules and regulations. For eg. some design system which induces queueing at bus stops instead of haphazard crowding during onboarding, etc.
Indian school children suffer from carrying heavy school bags. Propose solutions which would help reduce weight of the school bag. The solution could go beyond redesigning the bag and propose new technology solutions for teaching methods as well as class rooms.
Water conservation and reuse mechanism in various household activities. For eg. alternatives to RO systems which are equally effective for home and industry.
Entries are welcome from undergraduate and postgraduate students pursuing full-time program in any design school / engineering institute within India.
It is essential that the design solution submitted for this Design Challenge is duly certified by the institution the student is affiliated to. The design solution could be an individual project or a team project. Last date for submissions is 15 September, 2019.
In case, Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) is required to protect the design solution, an intimation to that effect should be sent to CII while submitting the entry. CII confirms and commits that no part of the design solution will be communicated outside other than the jury members in any form in such cases.
Award Ceremony – Winners will be presented the awards in the Hyderabad Design Week in October 2019
Cash Awards – 3 awards for the students – First prize: Rs. 1,00,000/-; Second prize: Rs. 75,000/- and Third prize: Rs. 50,000/-
Interaction – Opportunity to interact with global design fraternity.
Exhibition – Winners will get complimentary space for exhibiting the design solution during the Hyderabad Design Week in October 2019.
Design Summit – One free delegate pass for the Hyderabad Design Week.
Publicity – The winning students will receive wide visibility amongst design consultancies, design led organizations and other stakeholders through media presence at the event and through CII publication and website.

How well does the project solve the identified problem and what is the future potential of the design solution? How well design thinking is used; the process used between the insights and solution would also be considered.
How well is design described and how well it satisfies the identified needs? What aspects of the design makes it useful and novel? Is it designed for efficiency and comfort?Is it pleasant with its look and feel well resolved? Does it offer the solution for a substantial improvement in functionality?
Is the design solution based on logical and sound hypothesis and judgment? Has the project addressed the identified challenges effectively and demonstrates a reasonable solution for solving them? How other aspects such as ease of manufacturability and replicability, productivity and economics have been addressed?
Does the design solution clearly demonstrate benefits for its users, the society and the stakeholders? Does it show lateral, out-of-the-box thinking? Does it bring about a magical feeling?
Is the design solution eco-friendly? How does your design benefit society and/ or the environment?
How well was the entire design process described in terms of clarity in problem definition, solution provided, etc.
The application once submitted, will be evaluated by the jury members and results will be announced as per the timelines mentioned.
